RE-IMAGINING HISTORY: A 1920s hairstyle fashioned by Latenda for a 2017 audience

THE HAIRSTYLES in stylist to the stars Latenda Kalimba's shoot were inspired by the changing role of women in the 1920s.

On the advent of the American elections in 2016, Kalimba and her team at Latenda Hair Salon thought they would celebrate the 1920s, as that was the era women were given the right to vote.

The styling team for the shoot opted for white lace clothing to bring forth a modern yet classic element. The golden glow of the make-up and the shoes (see picture below) created a sleek and sensual, yet innocent look.

Kalimba says:

"We have to remember since women secured the right to vote, women have—time and again—donned white garments as a show of solidarity and as a way to identify historic achievements."

The pristine aesthetic pays homage to the official colour of the United States suffrage movement that took place early last century and gives a nod to the historic nature of the last election, when a female president was almost voted into American office.

During the suffrage movement, women wore clothing more convenient for physical activity and stopped wearing long skirts and corsets. Kalimba and co took this context into account with fashion that was fun, flirty and would have once been considered as barrier-breaking.

Kalimba used virgin Brazilian hair extensions which were dyed honey brown to blend with the model's natural hair colour.

Kalimba added:

"It's important to me to make my clients look and feel beautiful. I tend to go for concepts that empower females to highlight the beauty in women all shades and sizes".
