Award winning playwright to help community centre repay debt

FUNDRAISING ACT: Tayo Aluko

AWARD WINNING playwright and singer Tayo Aluko is to help raise funds for a centre campaigning to improve the rights and lives of women.

Aluko is among artists who will perform at the Crossroads Women’s Centre’s fundraising concert on Saturday (Oct 27). The event, at the community centre in Wolsey Mews, Camden, north London houses, starts at 7.30 pm.

The Liverpool-based playwright is best known for Call Mr. Robinson , his one-man show based on the life of African-American singer, actor and civil rights activist Paul Robeson.


DEBT HELP: Crossroads Women's Centre

He has wowed audiences at high profile events such as the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and America’s Carnegie Hall - and will perform From Africa to the White House: A journey of Resistance, Triumph and Spirituals to help the Crossroads Women’s Centre raise money to pay off debts linked to the purchase and renovation of its new building.

The centre opened its new building on May 1. It houses 16 independent charities including the Black Women’s Rape Action Project and Women of Colour in the Global Women’s Strike.

They offer a place of safety for vulnerable and low-income women.

A Crossroad Women’s Centre’s spokesperson told The Voice “Crossroads Women, the charity which runs the Centre, is fund-raising to pay off debts incurred in buying and renovating its new premises in Wolsey Mews, Kentish Town.

"Tayo Aluko and Naomi Paul have kindly donated their talents for Saturday’s fundraising event: From Carnegie Hall & the Edinburgh Festival to Crossroads."
