BARBADOS HURDLER Shane Brathwaite has qualified for the World Championships 110m hurdles final. The Bajan won his semi final with a time of 13.26 seconds which is a season’s best.

Brathwaite saw off Jamaican Hansie Parchment (13.27) and Devon Allen of America (13.27) to land a place in Monday’s final.

Brathwaite, 27, has an unusual claim to fame. His gold medal in the octathlon at the 2007 World Youth Championships in Athletics made his the first person from Barbados to win a gold medal at a global athletics championship.

The Barbados ace said:

"My coach and I have been working really hard on that race. We had a really good warm-up today and he told me 'You've got it in you, just go out and get it' and I did.

"Things are coming together really nicely. It's always hard to run a PB or season's best in a championships, so for me to do that, well I'm just happy and excited for the final."

There was more joy for the Caribbean when 400m ace Steven Gardiner from the Bahamas won the first heat of the semis in a time of 43.89 seconds which is a new national record. The 400m final takes place on August 8.
