TASTY SNACK: Alves eats a banana thrown by racist fans
BRAZIL INTERNATIONAL Dani Alves gave racist fans the metaphorical finger when he peeled and munched a banana thrown at him as he prepared to take a corner during Barcelona’s 3-2 win over Villarreal.
The 30-year-old full-back made the unusual response after a group of Villarreal supporters tried to antagonise the Barca player by suggesting he was a monkey by hurling the fruit at him.
Banana throwing has been often seen in Spain where racism inside stadiums is experienced by black players, while Alves has been subjected to such treatment on multiple occasions.
Speaking after the game about why he took a bite out of the banana, Alves said: “We have suffered this in Spain for some time.
“You have to take it with a dose of humour.”
The former Sevilla defender added: “We aren't going to change things easily.
“If you don't give it importance, they don't achieve their objective.”
Alves was involved in two of Barca’s goals as they came back from two goals down to claim all three points, allowing the right-back to have the last laugh over the racist fans.
