Bernie Grant Arts Centre-commissioned play to show in Hull

ONE-WOMAN SHOW: Yvette will be staged in Hull

'Yvette', a new play by Urielle Klein-Mekongo, will premiere in Hull, which is this year’s UK City of Culture, at the end of May.

Based on a true story, the one-woman show with music has been commissioned by the Bernie Grant Arts Centre in London, in association with Hull 2017. It is the tale of a stolen childhood and growing up with a secret:

Evie is thirteen and lives in North London with her Mum. She wants to tell us about something…her crush on Lewis, trying to be a woman, friends, virginity, garage remixes, hello kitty underwear… and an 'uncle' who lurks in the corners of her story. She wants to tell us something, but first she must face it herself.

Yvette is is showing from 31 May to 2 June as part of the Back to Ours festival, which is bringing theatre, live performance, music, film and more to local people at locations across the city.

Louise Yates, Producer at Hull UK City of Culture 2017, said:

"We are thrilled that Urielle Klein-Mekongo's Yvette is coming to Hull as part of its UK City of Culture programme. This new commission by Bernie Grant Arts Centre is a wonderful addition to the Back to Ours festival."

Yvette is winner of Young Harts Writing Fest Audience Favourite 2017, Kings Head Theatre Stella Wilkie Award 2017 and The East15 Pulse Award 2017.
