BLACK EXCELLENCE: Marley Dias CREDIT: Tyler Joe
12-YEAR-old Marley Dias is working on her own book about activism and social justice.
The youngster, who's hashtag #1000BlackGirlBooks is part of her mission to collect stories about women of colour, will publish her book with Scholastic, and is scheduled for a 2018 release.
Speaking on her book deal, Dias said she hoped her book would help advance "inclusion" and "social action." Her campaign for more books about girls like her, resulted in Ebony magazine naming her as one of America's "coolest black kids" and has brought her admirers including Michelle Obama and author Jacqueline Woodson.
"Marley's energy and passion are electric!" said Andrea Davis Pinkney, vice president and executive editor of Scholastic. "Through her smarts and ingenuity, she's delivered a jolt of inspiration that's sent an unstoppable shock-wave to kids everywhere who've stood up with Marley to shout 'Yes!' to the power of positive action."
"In this book, Marley will share her dynamic wisdom with readers everywhere. We're thrilled to welcome her to the Scholastic family."
