TAUNTED: Sordell

POLICE AND The FA are set to investigate allegations that Millwall fans allegedly racially abused Bolton Wanderers players at The Den on October 7.

The allegations were made by Bolton substitute Marvin Sordell, who claims that police failed to intervene after he and his team-mates Beink Afobe, Lee Chung-young and Darren Pratley were allegedly subjected to racial abuse during the Championship fixture.

Sordell, 21, said on social network website Twitter: “It’s 2012 in England and people are still shouting racial abuse at a football game!? Chungy, Pratts, Benik and I had all sorts of things said to us. The police were standing yards away and did nothing.”

The England under-21 international, who confirmed that he reported the incident to the authorities, continued: “Funniest thing is, if I had come on and scored and gave them some back, I would be the one who got fined.”

The FA have announced that they will launch an investigation into the claims today (October 8) while the Metropolitan police said, should they receive an official complaint, that they will also investigate the claims.

A spokesperson for Millwall said: “Millwall and Bolton Wanderers are investigating allegations made by Bolton player Marvin Sordell that he was subjected to racial abuse by an individual while warming up as a substitute during Saturday’s Championship clash at The Den.

“At this stage, we are trying to find any corroborative evidence we could use to take the allegations forward.”

The Lions formed the Millwall Anti Racism Trust, which is now known as Millwall For All, in 1994.

In January 2010, they were presented with an Intermediate Level of the Racial Equality Standard and are the first team in Football League to achieve this level.
