BONUSES: Home Secretary Sajid Javid shared the revelatory documents with the Joint Committee on Human Rights

A PRIVATE firm contracted by the government to remove members of the Windrush generation was offered bonuses by the Home Office if it exceeded its targets, documents have revealed.

Information disclosed by the home secretary Sajid Javid, following a request by the Joint Committee on Human Rights, shows that Capita were in line for a 2.5 per cent bonus if they exceeded deportation targets set for the removal of people from the UK.

If the company exceeded the target by 10 per cent, the bonus payment increased to 12.5 per cent.

Labour MP Harriet Harman, the chair of the committee, requested details of the government’s arrangement with Capita.

The correspondence from the home secretary revealed that Capita was contracted under an “outcome-based payment mechanism”.

Capita worked with the Home Office under two separate contracts. One that covered the detention and removal of those who had been refused right to remain in the UK and another in relation to contact management and casework.

One document states: “The authority wants to incentivise the contractor to increase the numbers of removals as part of the service, and to decrease other outcomes.”

Labour MP for Hackney Diane Abbott, responded to the revelations. She said: “So, when Amber Rudd said she didn't know about targets she was either incompetent or not telling the truth. All a product of Theresa May's 'hostile environment, which Sajid Javid hasn't ended.”

Harman has encouraged Javid to contact members of the Windrush generation to inform them that they could give their consent for their Home Office files to be seen by the committee, The Guardian has reported.

But Javid responded by saying that he did not consider that the understanding or analysis of the cases would be advanced by the Home Office contacting individuals on behalf of the committee.
