GOING HOME for the holidays can mean leaving the country altogether for many with African and Caribbean heritage.

The annual trip to sunnier climes, to stay with family and celebrate the festive season is something a lot of us are familiar with. And it turns out, the celebs are no different.

For the most recent Christmas and New Year break, quite a few American stars chose to jet set to Ghana. And this was all down to Ghanaian-German actor, Boris Kodjoe.

Kodjoe, whose Ghanaian father took him to the country to spend time with family in his youth, wanted his famous friends to experience the culture and that the country has to offer.

Among those who flew to the country for the festive season with Kodjoe and those who were their otherwise were Anthony Anderson, Jesse Williams, Bozoma Saint John, Rosario Dawson, Diggy Simmons, Djimon Hounsou and Jidenna.

Idris Elba, Tarrus Riley, Naomi Campbell, Edward Enninful and Ozwald Boateng were all also in the country for the festive period.

In a video posted on Instagram ahead of the trip, Kodjoe said: “Being that my father was from Ghana and we visited my grandmother, my cousins and my uncles. Every holiday we had makes me really connected to our country.”

He added: “That’s why I’m so excited to bring 40 of my famous friends, some of the world’s top celebrities to Accra in December, so they can meet the people, feel the culture, connect with the energetic heritage, they can relax on the beaches and tour the castles and then share their experience with the millions and millions of followers around the world,” he continued.

The Ghanaian government has launched its Year of Return 2019 programme, an initiative to encourage members of the black diaspora around the world to come back to Africa, specifically Ghana.
