Busta Rhymes ready to rock the UK stage

LIVE SHOW: Busta Rhymes

HE IS the hip-hop icon that ‘got us all in check’; the gravelly-voiced MC with an intricate lyrical technique.

An artist whose glittering 20-year career started when he became a founding member of 90s hip-hop outfit Leaders of the New School. Busta Rhymes, who went on to form and front the collective Flipmode Squad, was recently named by US magazine The Source as one of 50 greatest rappers of all time, and his single Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See was ranked 20th on MTV’s list of the 100 Greatest Videos Made.

Gearing up to headline the Superstars of Hip Hop show at London’s Eventim Apollo (formerly Hammersmith Apollo) – which will also feature hip-hop heroes Redman and Method Man – Busta talked to Life & Style about performing in London, his love for UK songstress Adele and his plans to return to Jamaica in the near future.

Where did the name Busta Rhymes come from?
My original name was Chill-O-Ski, but I thought it sounded corny. So [Public Enemy founding member] Chuck D named me Busta Rhymes after NFL Oklahoma Sooners halfback star George ‘Buster’ Rhymes.

What are the highlights of performing in London?
When I perform in London, what excites me every time is the amount of love the people have for the entire hip-hop culture. They are so passionate it amps me to always give a great performance so they know they are appreciated!

What can we expect from you on the night?
You can expect high energy, sweat, loudness, a ton of fun and a great performance!

The Source named you as one of 50 greatest rappers of all time. How does it feel to be known as a musical pioneer?
It feels great. It’s such a blessing to know that myself and the rest of the Leaders [of the New School] will forever be a part of history, helping to shape one of the greatest genres ever, which is hip-hop.

Do you still see the guys from Leaders of the New School?
All the time. They are from Long Island, where my family lives. It’s always fun seeing the crew.

Which hip-hop artists are currently on your playlist?
I listen to Kendrick Lamar, Ace Hood, Reek da Villian, Genesis and J-Doe.

Which UK artists are you listening to at the moment?
Adele. I just love that girl.

Describe a typical day for you…
I wake up, have breakfast, shower, check in with my team for daily updates, head to the gym, then finish the night off in the studio.

What advice would you give to anyone trying to make it as a rapper?
Never give up. Point blank – period!

You are of Jamaican parentage. Do you visit the island often?
I haven't been there in a few years due to my schedule. But I'll definitely be back soon. I love the food, the culture, and seeing my loved ones.

Tell us something that no one knows about you.
I love to read books.

To date, who has been your biggest inspiration?
My mum inspires me. She’s an amazing woman.
