CARICOM CHIEF CALLS FOR UNITY

CARICOM’S SECRETARY-general Irwin LaRocque has said that the Caribbean needs a focused and co-ordinated approach to diplomacy in the face of global problems. At a meeting of Caribbean foreign ministers, he said the region needed to “bolster its relations with like-minded states and continue to advocate for multilateralism”.

JAMAICA’S DISASTER ‘BACK-UP BOND’

THE WORLD Bank is helping Jamaica set up a “catastrophe bond” to allow it immediate access to a pre-approved credit facility in the event of weather-related disaster. Finance and public service minister Nigel Clarke said the bond would allow Jamaica, in the event of a disaster, to “draw on available resources without having to divert programmed expenditure”.

GRENADA PM HAILS PREMIUM RUM BID

GRENADA PRIME minister Keith Mitchell has called the new Renegade Rum project “transformational” for the island’s export earnings and economic activity. Visiting the project, which is being developed in St Andrew, he said the premium brand rum project “is having an enormous impact on the country as it is also contributing to diversification of the local economy”.

BOLT SCOOTER AND ‘MICRO CAR’ LAUNCH STAR

SPRINTER USAIN Bolt has hosted a European unveiling of his e-scooter and two-seater electric micro car. The scooter had a US launch last year. Bolt said at a May start-up and innovation event in Paris that the scooter was “about trying to get from place to place, how I’m going to be safe and how I’m going to get there on time”.
