DEBT PROTECTION AFTER DISASTERS?

TWO INTERNATIONAL Monetary Fund officials have called for a shake- up of the global financial system to buffer the Caribbean from debt after destructive hurricanes.

Alejandro Werner and Krishna Srinivasan suggested in the Financial Times that countries’ debt agreements should have “hurricane-linked clauses” to defer repayments in emergencies and they should also get access to new forms of hurricane-related debt insurance.

SINGLE-USE PLASTIC BAN INTRODUCED

BARBADOS HAS become the latest country to ban single-use plastic made from petroleum. The ban starts on April 1 and will include plastic cups, cutlery and Styrofoam containers.

Next year, the ban will extend to all petroleum-based plastic bags, except for those used for pharmaceuticals, medicines, hygiene and preserving food.

EMPOWERING GIRLS TO LEAD IN SPORTS

THE JAMAICA Olympic Association has launched a commission to empower girls and women to participate in sports and sports leadership.

President Christopher Samuda said: “One of the mandates of the Women In Sport Commission is to build character, particularly in our young women.”

CENTRES REBUILT AFTER HURRICANE

DOMINICA’S TOURISM and Culture Ministry has started work on two hurricane-damaged centres as part of their rehabilitation of old buildings.

The Arawak House of Culture and the Old Mill Cultural Centre will be ready by May in time for the Dominica Festival of Arts.
