BID TO HELP WOMEN STORE THEIR EGGS

The Hugh Wynter Fertility Management Unit (HWFMU) at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica is recommending loans to help young women store their eggs as part of a Jamaican family planning system.

“Most couples in their early 30s just bought their houses and now it’s time for a baby and it’s not happening. They don’t have any disposable income to put towards this, so it becomes an issue,” HWFMU consultant gynaecologist Dr Shaun Wynter told bankers, insurers and employers.

GUYANA’S ILLEGAL DRUG CLAMPDOWN

The director of Guyana’s Government Analyst Food and Drug Department, Marlon Cole, has said the country will be clamping down on unapproved pharmaceuticals. “A lot of companies locally do not want to be compliant with the registration regime,” he told the Guyana Chronicle. “It is only now we are trying to clean things up and ensure safe and efficacious drugs are out there.”

BARBADOS WANTS TO USE MARIJUANA

Barbados has become the latest Caribbean country to consider getting into the medical marijuana industry. Prime Minister Mia Mottley announced the plans to establish a project implementation unit during her budget speech.

Prime Minister Mottley said that the industry would “help many Bajans in the management of medical conditions”.

CARIFORUM SIGN DEAL WITH UK

Cariforum Member Countries (CARICOM plus the Dominican Republic) have signed an agreement with the UK which will govern their trade after it leaves the European Union.

The deal ensures continuity of existing trade agreements with the EU. The UK is CARIFORUM’s largest European trading partner.
