ACP ‘SHOULD HELP YOUNG PEOPLE’

A NEW European fund for the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group should help young people in rural areas extract better value from the business of agriculture, according to ACP Secretary General Patrick Gomes. Dr Gomes said the Agri-Business Capital Fund aims to add value to commodities and diversify the business of agriculture.

SURINAME: WE NEED FOREST SCHEME

SURINAME’S FIRST lady, Ingrid Bouterse-Waldring, and the speaker of the country’s National Assembly, Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, have called for global funding for a compensation scheme to encourage countries to keep their national forests.

Ms Geerlings-Simons told the Inter-Press Service that “we as highly forested countries should have an international fund in which we put some money if we push carbon into the air, and we get some money if we take it out of the air”.

BAJAN MINISTER IN LABOUR MOVE

BARBADOS WILL soon open its doors to skilled labour, especially from the Caribbean Community to deal with a growing demographics imbalance. Home Affairs Minister Edmund Hinkson said that “we need more young people in this country in their most productive age”.

TRINIDAD WORRY OVER DIABETES

THE PRESIDENT of the Diabetes Association of Trinidad and Tobago, Andrew Dhanoo, has said that more schoolchildren are showing indicators of pre-diabetes. Mr Dhanoo told a parliamentary select committee that “significant” changes were needed.
