FIVE NATIONS ADDED TO SLAVE TRADE LIST

CARICOM’S REPARATIONS Commission (CRC) has expanded the number of countries on its list accused of involvement in the slave trade. The CRC’s Vice-Chair, Prof Verene Shepherd, announced letters demanding reparations would be sent to Russia, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland and Latvia.

JAMAICA ATTRACTS RECORD NUMBERS

JAMAICA’S TOURISM Minister, Edmund Bartlett, has reported a record two million people visited the island in the rst ve months of 2019, bringing in $1.7bn (£1.3bn). Mr Bartlett said Jamaica was now working on retaining a greater portion of that tourist revenue, which currently stands at 40.8 cents out of every tourism dollar spent.

SHELL’S $397M TO TRINIDAD & TOBAGO

ENERGY COMPANY Royal Dutch Shell has agreed to pay Trinidad & Tobago $397m following negotiations over past gas contracts. Energy Minister Franklin Khan told parliament the next step would be discussions over restructuring the country’s Atlantic Lique ed Natural gas (LNG) operations. Trinidad had raised a series of claims over what Mr Khan called the “interpretation” of previous contractual arrangements.

GUYANA AND GHANA AGREE CLOSER TIES

GUYANA AND Ghana have agreed to a series of deals during a visit by Ghana’s President Nana Akufo- Addo. Ghana will provide free technical assistance to Guyana’s fledgling energy sector while Guyana covers workers’ salaries and travel costs.

Guyana has also introduced hassle-free entry for up to 90 days for Ghanaian na- tionals, while direct flights between the two countries will be discussed.
