COINCIDING WITH the 71st anniversary of the arrival of the Empire Windrush, the biopic Hero will begin its run of UK screenings in Brixton on June 22.

The film, inspired by the extraordinary life and times of Trinidadian war veteran, Ulric Cross, will be shown across London as part of the Windrush celebrations taking place.

All screenings, held in conjunction with community partners including the Black Cultural Archives (BCA), Fairweather Productions, Rudolph Walker Foundation and GeeStor Productions, and the New Black Film Collective, will be supported by celebrities from the media, theatre and cinemas.

Having watched its premiere at the BFI Southbank, actor Rudolph Walker, of EastEnders fame, said: “I was proud to play a part in this amazing film about the life of a man who I have always admired and when the opportunity came up to assist in promoting this film reaching a wider audience I jumped at it”.

Hero received rave reviews following its premiere. David Somerset of BFI Southbank commenteD: “It was an incredible experience. People said that it was one of the best Q&A’s they had attended. It’s an achievement to have made such a creative film and of such historical depth but at the same time, a moving insight into the man himself.”

Produced and directed by Frances-Anne Solomon, Hero cleverly interweaves dramatic sequences with archive of the time to tell a story that is both accessible and informative. All screenings will be followed by Q&A with Frances Anne.

Hero features a host of celebrated British actors including Joseph Marcell (Fresh Prince of Bel Air), playing the role of writer CLR James; Fraser James, playing the role of George Padmore and British-Nigerian actor Jimmy Akingbola (Holby City), playing Ghana’s first president Kwame Nkrumah.
