Church of England to recruit more black leaders

MORE NEEDED:The Church of England wants to recruit more black leaders like Dr. John Sentamu, Archbishop of York

MEMBERS OF the General Synod of the Church of England have voted to recruit more ethnic minority people into the church's leadership.

A report from Daniel Kajumba, Archdeacon of Reigate, shows ethnic minorities fill only 1.1 percent of bishops, archdeacons and cathedral deans posts although there are congregations where up 90 percent of members are ethnic minorities, the Independent newspaper reported.

Kajumba said there are only four ethnic minority clergy in these roles, including himself, Dr. John Sentamu, Archbishop of York, the Rt Rev David Hamid, Suffragan Bishop of Europe and the Rev Rogers Govender, Dean of Manchester Cathedral.
