Collymore Twitter abuser in the dock

UNDER TWITTER ATTACK: Stan Collymore

A NEWCASTLE University student has denied racially abusing former Aston Villa and Liverpool striker Stan Collymore.
Joshua Cryer, 21, was arrested in January after the TalkSPORT broadcaster reported the alleged Twitter abuse to Staffordshire Police. They passed the case on to the Northumbria police and Cryer, of Jesmond Newcastle upon Tyne, was issued with a public order charge.

The student appeared before magistrates today to deny sending the “grossly offensive” messages and the case has been adjourned until April 2.

Collymore won three England caps and made 61 league appearances for Liverpool, scoring 26 times. His transfer fee of £8.5m when he moved from Nottingham Forest to Anfield in 1995 was a British record.

The 40-year-old, who is an anti-racism campaigner and also supports the mental health charity Depression Alliance, has over 208,000 followers on Twitter. He wrote yesterday “taking extended twitter break. See you later” but logged on today to post a link to a guardian article about Cryer denying the abuse charges.

Next month's hearing is expected to last two hours and the defence called for one particular witness, unnamed in court, to appear on that day.
