Corbyn calls for funding for Black Cultural Archives

TO MARK the end of Black History Month, Parliament held a reception last night where Jeremy Corbyn pledged his support for a campaign to secure the long-term funding of the Black Cultural Archives in Windrush Square, Brixton.

As the only national heritage centre dedicated to collecting, preserving and celebrating the histories of African and Caribbean people in Britain, the Black Cultural Archives holds a significant place in the hearts and minds of many.

However, the Black Cultural Archives has lost two thirds of its revenue funding after four years of Heritage Lottery funding came to an end. A campaign being led by local Member of Parliament Helen Hayes is calling on the government to urgently intervene to secure the long-term financial stability of this vitally important institution.

This year the Black Cultural Archives placed a vital role in the Windrush anniversary celebrations, and also provided support for Windrush citizens caught up in the Windrush scandal.

Speaking last night, Corbyn said: “Black history is British history, and the Black Cultural Archives is a crucially important institution.

“I am very proud to be supporting the campaign to secure long-term funding so this institution can continue its fantastic and valuable work celebrating and teaching future generations about our history, in all its diversity.

“In light of the Windrush scandal, Black History Month has taken on a renewed significance this year. As the month draws to a close it is important that we celebrate the immense contribution that Black Britons have made to our country and reflect on the progress that has been made towards equality, while committing to continuing the fight for justice.”

In addition, Over 100 cross-party MPs have signed a letter urging Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sports (DCMS), Jeremy Wright MP to provide urgent funding support to the BCA
