Daniel Kaluuya to chair British Independent Film Awards jury

BIFA Awards: Daniel Kaluuya will chair the New Talent Jury

DANIEL KALUUYA will chair a jury at the 2018 British Independent Film Awards (BIFA), it has been announced.

The Get Out star has been appointed as the chair of the New Talent Jury, which decides on the winners of the debut director, debut screenwriter, breakthrough producer and most promising newcomer awards.

The 29-year-old actor said: “There’s no better time than right now to support the fresh, immediate voices and perspectives that will grow and push the boundaries of independent film.

“BIFA puts the spotlight on people brave enough to make their first steps and I and my fellow jurors have been blown away by the incredible talent of all of the nominees and their amazing work.”

Also serving on the BIFA juries are actors Chiwetel Ejiofor and Ashley Walters.
Both Ejiofor, winner of the 2015 Richard Harris award, and Walters, who received the most promising newcomer award in 2004, will serve on the main jury.

The winners of this years awards, which are in their 21st year, will be announced at a ceremony on Sunday December 2 at Old Billingsgate.

New Work

Kaluuya, who has starred in TV show Skins and Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror, has been cast as Slim in Lena Waithe’s Queen & Slim.

The story follows a couple who go on the run after killing a police officer in self-defence. Jodie Turner-Smith will play Queen.

The film is due for release in November 2019.
