CAMPAIGN SUPPORT: Sturridge in action against Manchester City (PA)

FOOTBALLER DANIEL Sturridge has thrown his weight behind a petition asking the government to make black history a compulsory fixture on the national school curriculum.

The 24-year-old Liverpool and England striker, who is the Premier League’s second highest scorer this season, tweeted his support for the campaign to change what pupils learn in the classroom.

On the social media site he shared a link to the petition and urged: "Everyone go and sign this petition.

"Doesn't matter what race you are, history is history. Lets make a change!"

To date the petition, started by mum Stephanie Pitter, has attracted over 18,000 signatories.

In a statement on the petition, its organisers say the campaign to introduce the change is in order to help "enrich the development of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural needs of all ethnic groups."

It adds: "We believe Black History should be made a mandatory element of the national curriculum."
