HOPEFUL FOR CHANGE: Danny Rose has said Raheem Sterling was spot with comments on the media and racism

DANNY ROSE has said Raheem Sterling was “100% spot on” with his comments on negative media coverage of black players fuelling racism.

The England full-back said the Manchester City star’s statement represented “what we all say in the dressing room”.

In an interview with BBC Sport, Rose said: "Raheem was only saying what we all say in the dressing room.

"It's sad really but he's 100% spot on with what he said."

The 28-year-old added: "The stick he used to get from the media was bang out of order. When he put the [Instagram] post up about the media we were all over the moon with that because we all agree. Fair play to Raheem."

The Tottenham defender has made the comments ahead of England’s Euro 2020 qualifying match against the Czech Republic on Friday.

Rose said: "Now it's not just boys in the dressing room talking about the media targeting Raheem, the general public have now seen it. We hope it changes but it doesn't affect Raheem in any way, which we are all grateful for."

In December, Sterling used Instagram to highlight the negative way black players are written about in the mainstream press. He posted screenshots from two Daily Mail articles alongside a lengthy caption about the contrasting way Tosin Adarabioyo and Phil Foden, who is white, were framed.

The headline on the article about Adarabioyo, read that the young player had splashed on a mansion on the market for £2.25 million “despite having never started a Premier League match. In contrast, the article referring to Foden read that the “starlet” had bought a £2 million home for his mum.

The 24-year-old wrote: “You have two young players starting out there careers both play for the same team, both have done the right thing. Which is buy a new house for there mothers who have put in a lot of time and love into helping them get where they are, but look how the newspapers get their message across for the young black player and then for the young white player.

“I think this in unacceptable both innocent have not done anything wrong but just by the way it has been worded.”
