David Lammy receives racist letter after Widdecombe comments

DAVID LAMMY has taken to Twitter to share a racist letter he received, after calling out comments made by Ann Widdecombe.

The Brexit Party MEP made a speech at the European Parliament last Thursday, where she declared that the UK leaving the EU is comparable to slaves rising up against their owners.

“There is a pattern consistent throughout history of oppressed people turning on the oppressors - slaves against their owners, the peasantry against the feudal barons, colonies... against their empires, and that is why Britain is leaving,” she said.

Following her speech, many took to social media to call out the 71-year-old’s ill-mannered remarks, including Lammy who described them as ‘ahistorical’.

Taking to Twitter, he said: “It is impossible to explain how offensive and ahistorical it is for you to equate my ancestors tearing off their chains with your small-minded nationalist project. Shame on you.”

Widdecombe defended her speech, stating that it was not her responsibility if people want to interpret what she’s said in a certain way.

It was not long before the Widdecombe clan raced to her side and Brexit ‘freedom fighters’ declared their allegiance.

One, too cowardly to leave a name, but bold enough to haul a tirade of racial abuse, sent Lammy the letter, which read:

DEAR WOG
I HAVE JUST BEEN MADE AWARE OF THE EXTREMELY RUDE AND DISRESPECTFUL REMARKS YOU HAVE MADE ABOUT ANN WIDDECOMBES SPEECH AT THE E.U. RECENTLY
YOU SHOULD BE HUNG UPSIDE DOWN, SUSPENDED BY YOUR DIRTY BLACK B******* AND GIVEN A SEVERE THRASHING
NOW GET YOURSELF A BANANA AND CLIMB BACK UP YOUR TREE
SINK THE WINDRUSH AND ITS CARGO OF FILTH

The comments left underneath Lammy’s tweet proved an even more interesting read. Whilst most expressed their dismay at the letter, some attempted to minimise the severity of the abuse by questioning the authenticity of it.

One Twitter user wrote: “I'm not convinced this note is authentic, people of colour have been known to send such racist comments to themselves in order to gain attention. Frankly, Mr Lammy after viewing the lunacy of your recent tweets I wouldn't be surprised if you were the sender sending to yourself.”

Lammy has since reported the racial abuse to The Metropolitan Police.
