Doreen Lawrence to hold private memorial for Stephen

MEMORIAL: Doreen Lawrence

STEPHEN LAWRENCE'S mother, Doreen Lawrence has said she hopes to continue building on Stephen’s legacy as she marks 19 years since the teenager was killed.

Stephen, an aspiring architect, was stabbed to death by a gang of youths in a racist attack on April 22, 1993 in Eltham, southeast London.

In January, after a 19-year fight for justice, two men were jailed for his murder.

Lawrence is to hold a private memorial service in central London on Tuesday (April 24) to mark the 19th anniversary of her son’s murder.

‘The service (which begins at 3.00 pm) will mark both Stephen’s life and the partial justice achieved by the Lawrence family, after 18 years of campaigning,’ The Stephen Lawrence Trust said.

Speaking just days before she holds the private memorial service, Lawrence, who has described the sentences as a ‘partial victory’, thanked Voice readers for supporting the family over the years as they sought to get Stephen’s killers tried and jailed.

Lawrence said she now wants the public’s help to continue to secure his legacy, the Stephen Lawrence Centre in Deptford, south London.

She said she is ‘looking forward to the future and the continued work of the Trust, in helping young people like Stephen.’
In January, Lawrence announced that the centre, which provides courses in areas such as information technology to young people, was at risk of closing because of a lack of funding.

The Stephen Lawrence Trust told The Voice it is hoping to raise £500,000 and is currently working on various projects, to help raise money over the coming year, including having art projects and a sponsored walk around September.

People can help the Stephen Lawrence centre by sending cheques to The Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust, 39 Brookmill Road,Deptford, London, SE8 4HU.
