Edoburun and Asher-Smith bound for Doha

RECORD-BREAKER: Dina Asher-Smith celebrates winning the 100m in the fastest British Athletics Championship time

THE SPRINTERS took the plaudits at the Muller British Athletics Championships as Ojie Edoburun and Dina Asher-Smith secured their places on the team flight to the World Championships in Doha next month.

Asher-Smith’s winning time in the 100m of 10.9 seconds was a new championship record and continued her rich vein of form over the shortest of the outdoor sprints.

“I’m happy to have got the win and lower the championship record considering the headwinds. From 11.03 to 10.97s is a big drop, normally it’s a couple of hundredths but I’m not complaining,” she said.

“When you have two rounds in a day, you run them like they’re world championships semis and finals. You have to run for each and every place.”

Edoburun has never won this competition but was over the moon to have put that right as well as ensuring he gets to wear the GB vest when the team heads to Qatar.

Fending off favourite Zharnel Hughes and sub10 men Adam Gemili and CJ Ujah, Edoburun’s explosive start and sheer determination to hold on to the title saw him dip for gold millimetres ahead of the aforementioned duo.

“I felt it was mine for the taking and I knew that,” said Edoburun.

“I kept composed, felt a bit of cramp towards the end but held my own and couldn’t care less because I’ve got the medal and that’s the important thing.”

It was the first time ever that the three medallists all recorded the same time, with 10.18 being awarded to the silver medallist Gemili and the bronze medallist Hughes.
