Engineer Roni wins top award

SUCCESS: Engineer Roni Savage

ENGINEERING GEOLOGIST Roni Savage was honoured with a top award last month.

Eight of the country’s top female entrepreneurs were announced as winners of the 2018 NatWest Everywoman Awards at The Dorchester in London.

During the event Savage, picked up the Athena Award as an inspirational woman who has run her business for 6 to 9 years.

Savage is a rare black female entrepreneurial engineer, who founded Jomas Associates Ltd, in 2009.

The company undertakes geotechnical engineering and land contamination assessments, including site investigations, enabling the reclamation of many brownfield sites across the UK.

Hillingdon based Savage started her engineering and environmental consultancy at the age of 29, after making the decision to go it alone.
Prior to launching she had a successful career working for small to medium, as well as large international engineering consultancies.

Serving the construction industry where only approximately 10 per cent of the workforce is female Savage has challenged many stereotypes.

She was been involved in projects across the UK, including the widening of major roads such as the A406 and M25 and along the way took Jomas to a £2 million turnover in 2017.

Her team work with land developers including residential, commercial and industrial developers, local authorities and government bodies.
The entrepreneur has picked up a number of awards this year, including being named Black British Business of the Year ( sponsored by Bloomberg), Precious Awards Entrepreneur of the year 2018 (Sponsored by Santander), Venus Awards Entrepreneur of the Year 2018 and Best Business Woman in STEM.

Jomas also won Precious Awards SME Business of the year, and Construction Enquirer Best Consultant to Work For, sponsored by Bouygues as well as being named as one of the Top 10 Suppliers to the Construction Industry in 2018.

Savage said that the accolades are a testament of the hard work she puts into running her engineering company to ensure a provide a high level of service to  its construction industry clients.

"I am extremely pleased with the accolades awarded to me and Jomas this year. I’m really excited as this opportunity gives me a larger platform to act as a role model to others. I’m keen to do my bit in creating a more diverse and inclusive environment in the engineering and construction industry”.

Speaking earlier this year, the entrepreneur said: “When I set up Jomas, my goal was to turn over £50,000 and deliver great customer service and high-quality work to a small selection of clients working on my own.

“Through referrals and by following my vision of providing a customer focused service, I was able to generate revenues of just over £200,000 in that first year. Since then we have grown on average, 30% annually.”
