NFL LOVE was in full effect as Odell Beckham Jr touched down in Tottenham, north London last week, for a 24 hour Nike take-over!

The tour coincided with OBJ’s latest sneaker drop with Nike – the Air Max 720 “Young King of the Drip” – which was given away to an exclusive group of Nike SNEAKRS Stash winners at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

From there, OBJ visited the spaces in north London that are enabling young people to achieve their dreams. Better still, OBJ even made a surprise visit to my cousin’s Caribbean restaurant Brown Eagle opposite the new Spurs Stadium! It was awesome to have his #13 shirt being gifted to the shop! What’s the Play will be getting an exclusive interview with OBJ when he returns later this year for the NFL UK Games so stay tuned!

PURE LIFE

Steph D’Sa from the What’s the Play team took a trip to Costa Rica, where she enjoyed the breathtaking nature, magnificent rainforests, natural hot springs plus more.

While there, she couldn’t explore the amazing country without delving into the music movement in Costa Rica, so she met up with Docta Rythm Selecta a famous DJ, producer and TV/radio host from San Jose. Docta is soon to launch a national TV series dedicated exclusively to reggae on Costa Rican’s main music video channel. Find out more about him in our interview below:

Q: Who is Docta?

Docta Rythm Selecta: I am a DJ/producer/promoter/radio & TV host from San Jose, Costa Rica. With a professional career spanning 15 years, I’ve managed to form a movement which blends reggae, ska, rocksteady, dub and dancehall which relates to my roots, history and sound.

Q: So you’re from Costa Rica – Tell us more about your inspiration with music and entertainment?

Docta Rythm Selecta: I’m from San Jose and despite being from the city, I have always been influenced by the Caribbean culture. My greatest musical inspiration has been different family members who have always worked in music, both singers and professional musicians.

As a DJ or selector, my greatest inspiration has always been Sir David Rodigan who has been in charge since its inception to break stereotypes, barriers and achieve goals that many of us dream of today. His vast knowledge and musical mastery has always marked the way for us to learn something new every day.

As a producer, my major inspiration is King Jammys and most producers of the old school of reggae who managed to create great hits with few resources and few materials which gives even more value to their work.

Q: Costa Rica is famous for saying ‘Pura Vida’ which means ‘pure life’ in Spanish. What does that saying mean for you?

Docta Rythm Selecta: Pura Vida represents our idiosyncrasy and the daily life of a “Tico” (Costa Rican). In reggae as sung by Pressure Busspipe ‘pure life’ represents everything good, everything positive and all the energy that allows us to achieve our goals.

Q: What’s your biggest milestone?

Docta Rythm Selecta: In these 15 years of my career, I’ve achieved many goals such as my radio program, soon my own TV program, a collaboration in the production of concerts with artists like Damian Marley, TOK, Steel Pulse, Skatalites, Chronixx, Kabaka, Raging Fyah, Capleton and many more as well as getting my message to the most massive clubs in Costa Rica like Club Vertigo and La Concha.

But my greatest achievement was my first European tour in 2018 where I performed in countries such as Holland, Finland and Spain.

Q: What’s your upcoming plans?

Docta Rythm Selecta: I’m preparing to launch a TV program dedicated exclusively to reggae music on the main video music channel of the country, as well as new concerts with artists of the highest level in the world of reggae music. In addition to the tour in Europe, I have worked in shows in Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador. We are working on generating a new tour for other cities in the world but it is still in process.

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with anyone in the future?

Docta Rythm Selecta: Part of the goal is to be able to work with great artists such as Chronixx or Koffee but my vision is focused on generating music with the veterans of the scene from Toots Hibbert to Super Cat and Capleton.

Q: Where can we follow you to find out more?

Docta Rythm Selecta: You can find me on every social media platform and my mixtapes on SoundCloud and Mixcloud. I also have a YouTube Channel and my radio show is on every Sunday in “Cientotres FM” 103.1FM and soon the TV Show on “VM Latino Channel” Channel 29.
