Fans give $155k to fund De La Soul's first album in a decade

NEW MUSIC: US hip-hop group De La Soul

HIP-HOP trip De La Soul will be working on their eighth studio album - thanks to thousands of dollars raised by fans to fund the music project.

The innovative rappers, whose last album The Grind Date was released in 2004, set up a Kickstarter crowd-funding page yesterday (Mar 30), and reached their $110,000 target within hours.

“Typically the fans have been the ones who support and appreciate our vision, so using Kickstarter and giving our fans the opportunity to be a part of the process just feels right,” De La Soul wrote on the project’s Kickstarter page.

“We see Kickstarter as a home for creative minds and a wonderful platform; where people who believe, respect and see the vision, can support an idea and make it a reality.”

ME MYSELF & I: The rapping trio formed in 1989

The group, whose hit singles include Me Myself and I and Saturdays, added: "We’re crowdfunding it to help pay for recording, mixing, marketing, and everything else. Your support will keep us in the studio, help us continue to sample and manipulate the music we’ve recorded, will help us get additional production work done; and will help us design, package, market, and distribute the album.

"The whole thing. We literally cannot do it without you."

The page, which is still welcoming funds, has currently raise £155,561 (as of Mar 31 at 11:35am), and the donations are still coming in.

Backers who donate to the project will be eligible for a bunch of goodies, including USB drives shaped like the heads of De La Soul members, out of stock De La Nike Dunks trainers and even a Skype session with the rappers.
