On-fire Williams 100 not out at US Open

WINNING: Serena Williams

SERENA WILLIAMS clocked up her century of Singles victories at New York's Flushing Meadows to storm into the US semi-finals on Tuesday (September 2).

China's Wang Qiang was her latest victim, duly despatched 6-1 6-0 in a quick-fire 44 minutes by the powerful American ace.

Next up for the six-time US Open champion is Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, who dismissed battling Brit Johanna Konta and has yet to drop a set at this year's tournament.

Williams, who last lifted the US Open in 2014, has set a familiar pattern at this Grand Slam. Every time she has lost the final, the 37-year-old has bounced back the following year to capture the title.

And if that impressive scenario is to continue then the American veteran will need to return to the Arthur Ashe Stadium this weekend to banish last season's shock defeat, in a controversial final, to Japan's hard-hitting Naomi Osama.

Should Williams claim a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam Singles crown this weekend, then she will also surpass compatriot Chris Evert's remarkable achievement of 101 US Open triumphs at Singles.

Williams proved too hot to handle with her power game in top gear to simply overwhelm the hapless no.18 seed, who failed to hit a single winner in the one-sided encounter.

Surprisingly, Williams showed no sign of a problem with her right ankle that she rolled during her success over Croatia's Petra Martić on Sunday (31 August).

Williams' confidence will be soaring after this display, having won 90 per cent of her first serve points and captured all five break point chances in what turned out to be a dreary pushover.

Whether Svitolina can stop on-fire Williams is anyone's guess. However, the 24-year-old stunned Williams the last time they met, edging into the Rio Olympic Games quarter-finals in Brazil.
