WIG CASE: Nicki Minaj (PA)
AMERICAN RAPPER Nicki Minaj is facing a $30m (£18m) lawsuit after her former stylist launched legal action claiming she sold wigs based on his designs without seeking permission.
Terrence Davidson started creating wigs for the star in 2010 but stopped working for her in early 2013 because of creative differences.
The wig designer claimed he had previously approached Minaj to discuss opening a joint venture to create and sell a range of wigs.
However, the deal did not materialise and Davidson alleges she has started to trade and sell wigs based on his original designs.
Minaj and her representatives have not yet commented on the lawsuit which was filed in Atlanta.
Davidson also claims one of Minaj’s representatives offered him the promise of having his own reality TV show about being a celebrity wig designer.
The legal papers file claim the rapper and her team “took active steps to isolate [him] and preclude him from the notoriety he deserved for his wig designs”.
The stylist, who works for Jennifer Hudson and Patti LaBelle accused Minaj of causing him to lose $30m in earnings.
His lawyer Christopher Chestnut said Minaj “took a number of his popular wig designs, without his consent, and used them to start her own wig line”.
He added: “Her lawyers may complicate it, but we don't need to get into intellectual-property law. "This is basic American morality. Nicki Minaj lied to this man and cheated him”.
