MUSIC STREAMING staple Spotify have recently made a grime genre category on its platform.

Senior editor at Spotify, Austin Darbo, yesterday (3 January) made the announcement on Twitter; stating that the introduction of the category “will make it easier for fans to find their favourite grime playlists.”

In a follow-up tweet, Darbo explained that he "spoke to some grime legends about the imagery we used around the genre. Overall they felt the council block / pirate radio origins was a good way to represent it -- and it will evolve."

Rising to prominence around 2002, Grime has since become a quintessential British sound. Within the last five years, the genre has been more embraced in the mainstream sphere. The success of contemporary artists such as Skepta and Stormzy have played a pivotal role in introducing the music to a wider listenership.

At the moment, three new grime playlists have been uploaded to Spotify: Grime Shutdown, Grime Classics and Grime Instrumentals. These feature classic tracks from the artists such as Wiley, Roll Deep, Big Shaq and more.
