CARNIVAL: Expect lots of fabulous feathered costumes

THE BEST cure for Carnival tabanca is...carnival. If you’re suffering withdrawal symptoms from Notting Hill Carnival or from attending any of the other carnivals in the Caribbean this year, then you’ll want to head down to Hackney tomorrow.

Hackney Carnival takes place Sunday, September 9, between 12pm and 8pm. The theme for this year's event is "iconic Hackney".

The family-friendly event will feature a procession of bands travelling along Queensbridge Road, Richmond Road, Mare Street, Amhurst Road and Dalston Lane from 1.30pm.

More than 1,000 performers from 28 carnival bands are expected to take part.

There will a pop-up play area, entertainment in Hackney Town Hall Square sound systems and food stalls in Ridley Road, with carnival judging also taking place in the town hall square.

This year, Faggamuffin Bloc Party will make history as Hackney Carnival’s first ever sound system organised by queer people of colour.

Other bands, sound systems and acts taking part in tomorrow’s event include UFO Steel Band, Soca Sagaboys, Carnival Elders Float and Visual Ministry Gospel Choir.
