Hair and beauty show for black women returns for second year

SHADES OF BEAUTY LIVE: The event organisers are on a mission to make sure black women know their worth

A HAIR and beauty show celebrating black women that boasts Beverley Knight on the lineup returns to London for the second time this weekend.

Shades of Beauty Live, billed as the exhibition for women of colour, by women of colour, will take place at Lindley Hall in Westminster on Saturday August 31 and Sunday September 1.

Highlights of this year's programme include a keynote from Beverley Knight and segments with Shingai Shoniwa, Vanessa Sankuye, Erica Matthews and celebrity make up artist Lori Bee. There will also be makeup and hair stages where guests can discover professional tips.

SPECIAL GUEST: Beverly Knight will deliver this year's keynote

The event will feature over 50 exhibitors and sponsors, including new brands with exclusive online presence, providing visitors with the rare the opportunity to meet, sample and shop with them in person.

This year's theme, "The Currency of Black Beauty", will explore how the financial value of black hair and beauty customers – who spend six times as much on hair products than their white counterparts, according to research from L’Oréal – translates into how they are treated and valued by brands.

Shades of Beauty Live co-founder and organiser Christina Adesina said: “The gender pay [gap] has received a lot of attention in recent years but we still need to address the race pay gap. The Shades of Beauty Live community has provided feedback on the disparity between black female influencers being paid less than their white counterparts, despite having similar or more followers and engagement. Beauty and fashion brands must continue to work with the community on all levels not just as consumers but also as business women.”

The team behind Shades of Beauty Live are on a mission to make this happen and ensure black women know their worth.
