How to celebrate Guyana's 50th Independence Day in the UK

JUST FOR LAUGHS: Comedienne Leza ‘Radika’ Singh Leza ‘Radika’ Singh will perform as part of the Guyana indepence celebration in the UK

THE GUYANESE community in the UK will be marking the country’s 50th year of independence with a series of events.

The celebrations began with the arrival of the newly appointed High Commissioner of Guyana to the UK, His Excellency, Mr Frederick Hamley Case, who took up his post at the High Commission in London last month.

Also in April, Guyana’s Vice President, Mr Carl Greenidge visited the UK and greeted members of the Diaspora community at the Kings College London where he gave a lecture on the historical, legal and political dimensions of the controversy between his country and Venezuela over the latter’s claim to almost two-thirds of Guyana’s territory and a substantial portion of its exclusive maritime zone. His visit was hosted by the Ramphal Institute.

One event organised by the Guyanese UK Diaspora to mark the landmark anniversary is a black tie gala dinner, show and dance under the honorary patronage of Baroness Valerie Amos, at London’s Park Plaza Riverbank Hotel on Saturday (May 28).

A star-studded line up of Guyanese UK celebrities and dignitaries are expected to attend, with entertainment by international Guyanese artist Jumo (lead singer of Byron Lee & The Dragonaires); comedienne Leza ‘Radika’ Singh; and UK lovers rock songstress Marie Pierre.

In addition, Croydon’s Oasis Academy will play host to the ninth annual Guyana Folk Festival on Monday (May 30). The family day out will celebrate the best of Guyanese culture food and music, with a live stage show, stalls and plenty of dancing, with tunes coming courtesy of DJs including Mr Marlon, DJ Blondee, and Mista Stylee.
