EMPOWERING: Olmec graduates from a previous scheme

OLMEC, PART of the Real Change Collective, is launching a significant Tampon Tax-funded project aimed at black and Minority Ethnic (BME) women entrepreneurs who want to set up social enterprises.

Representatives of the group, which provides specialist housing, employment, immigration, legal and health advice, will all be at the launch of the new course in south London later this month.

It is aimed at BME women with business ideas who want to make their dreams a reality with expert help on the course.

Olmec, which launched in 2003, are launching the programme with a free-of-charge meeting and series of workshops.

The event will give budding women social entrepreneurs the opportunity to test their social enterprise ideas on experts and hear how to develop them into businesses that can benefit the wider community.

The taster day on July 25, at the Karibu Centre, Gresham Road, Brixton, which includes lunch will give some the opportunity to join a free 12-week programme to help launch a social enterprise.

Speakers will include Life After Hummus founder Farrah Rainfly, Embrace UK founder Alem Grebrehiwot and Green Elephant founder Pheonix Robinson who have all been supported through the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport’s Tampon Tax Fund (TTF).

Organiser John Mayford, of Olmec, said: “First Steps in Social Enterprise is designed to benefit people with a social enterprise idea, sole traders considering social enterprises, new-start social enterprises that want to strengthen their model, people or groups considering a move from voluntary sector to social enterprise model, or budding social entrepreneurs.

“It’s free and an excellent opportunity to bounce your ideas off experts and get some great pointers. We will be running a free 12 week programme for the best social enterprise ideas so that they can make their plans and dreams reality.”
