Introducing...Lucky Daye

TALENT: Lucky Daye released his debut album, Painted in May

LUCKY DAYE is on a roll and it’s looking like things are only just beginning for the New Orleans-born singer/ songwriter.

After the May release of his debut album Painted, an opening tour slot with Ella Mai in February, sold-out headline shows in Los Angeles, New York and London and over 45 million streams worldwide, we are in anticipation of more incredible moments to come from this genre-defying superstar.

UNCONVENTIONAL
After an unconventional upbringing, and being somewhat sheltered from the outside world, forbidden from listening to music or watching television, Lucky had to adapt to living a ‘normal’ life at quite a late and awkward age – this eventually worked to his advantage, though, embracing his individualism and not fighting to fit in. He was served some of the sourest lemons and he made lemonade.

The devastation of Hurricane Katrina displaced his family and they ended up moving to the small town of Tyler, Texas. Lucky discovered his natural gift for singing and writing and ultimately knew he wanted to pursue music, so moved to Atlanta for a brief stint and eventually ended up in LA to pursue his dream.

His undeniable talent as a vocalist took shape and landed him at his label home, Keep Cool, co-founded by the A&R guru Tunji Balogun, known for his role in signing Bryson Tiller, Khalid and SZA – in partnership with RCA Records.

It was in LA this past February that I met Lucky Daye for the first time.

We chopped it up about his unusual upbringing and he played me music from his two EPs, 1 & 2. We spoke on his desire to have his music received globally, and it seems he has done just that.

Last month he had his first headline show in the UK which, as mentioned, was sold out. His performance, much like his music, was exciting for all R’n’B fans.

The album is a seamless progression of habit in which Daye has been returning to since childhood – heartfelt expressions, adolescent love letters. It is full of intensity, joy, confusion and pain. Full of passion. Truly a reflection of distorted human connection during some of life’s most isolating times and experiences.

COLLABORATORS
Featuring production from long-time collaborators and Grammy award-winning duo D’Mile (who has worked with H.E.R, Ty Dolla Sign, Eric Bellinger) and DJ Camper (H.E.R, Mary J Blige, Brandy), these two guys are responsible for a lot of the new wave of R&B blowing up right now, and their contribution to Painted displays just that.

Lucky’s latest visual offering from Painted, is for the new single Real Games. Donning a beautiful Afro-rocking ebony Goddess as his love interest, the video is both quirky and encapsulating with a fun retro vibe.
