Jamaican dancers headed for Birmingham

TOP PERFORMANCE: Redemption Rite choreographed by Marlon Simms

THE INTERNATIONALLY ac-claimed National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica (NDTC) is on its way to Birmingham to deliver a unique and thrilling theatrical performance in September.

In its 50 years of existence, the NDTC has creatively fused the lore, music and dance traditions of Jamaica, Africa and South America with both modern and classical ballet forms.

The renowned dance company’s history is as storied as Jamaica’s journey since 1962, the year in which it was formed and the island won its independence.

The NDTC has a long tradition of showcasing Jamaica’s strong heritage and rich culture through captivating performances for which it has gained international recognition.

Its unpaid members, who are students, teachers, lawyers, civil servants and administrators, continue to be motivated by the premise that dance will contribute to the task of nation building.

The Birmingham-based Kajans women’s enterprise has been instrumental in bringing the dance company to Britain. They are scheduled to perform at Birmingham’s Alexandra Theatre on September 21 and 22.

Hermin McIntosh, director of Kajans, said: “This is a tremendous coup to have the NDTC come to the Midlands. It’s something that will attract fans of Jamaican dance and should be an unforgettable performance in an historic year.”

The company will also perform at the Malvern Theatre on September 17 and 18 and at Liverpool’s Black-E Arts Centre on September 28 and 29.
