'Lisa Mafia is my ideal girl'

SECRET CRUSH: Wretch 32 says his perfect woman is So Solid singer, Lisa Mafia

WE SPEAK to north London man of the moment Jermaine Scott aka Wretch 32 to find out what keeps him going in life. Nominated for several MOBO awards, here he reveals who his greatest inspiration is and who he regards as his ideal woman.

Where did your passion for music come from?
I would say it came from my dad. He’s a DJ and just hearing him playing a lot of music in the house really influenced me and inspired me to do my own music.

What’s your definition of a ‘waste man’?
A ‘waste man’ is someone who does nothing, and has nothing, and has no aspiration to be or get anything. I don’t think you’re a ‘waste man’ if you don’t have money, I think you’re a waste man if you haven’t got money and you don’t aspire to get money.

What would you say to young person who wants to follow in your footsteps?
Never give up and keep trying no matter how hard it gets or how many rejections you receive through the post. This race is not for the swift. A person who I greatly admire is Noel Clark, who wrote a film, got a sequel and received a BAFTA. That’s crazy coming from a kid who had an idea while sitting in his bedroom. His success shows me and others that the sky is your limit.

Do you think north London has something special? There are quite a number of stars in the hood?
I think so...I think it might be something in the water!

What were your teenage years like in setting goals?
It was pretty crazy, it was pretty mad, but I understood that when you’re thrown into any situation you just have to deal with it. That’s the situation I was in, you do your best until you know better. Right now I know better so I am doing it

What’s the last thing that made you laugh?
I’m always laughing, every day!

What are your goals and passion in life?
I just want to deliver the best music I can for as long as I can and be relevant for as long as possible.

If you could hook up with any artist who would it be?
Damian Marley

Where do you see the future of British music?
I think if ten is the highest, and zero the lowest I think we are at stage 1. I think there are 9 more stages to go. It will happen with time, with evolution and with great artists.

Who’s your ideal girl?
Without a doubt, Lisa Mafia.

What action hero would you play?
Spiderman. The whole web thing is cool!

Who is your role model?
My dad because he is the man that inspired me to be who I am, and he’s done so much for me. I have so much love and respect for him.

What is the one thing that your dad taught?
He taught me that if somebody hits you, hit them back.
