ONLINE ABUSE: Stan Collymore

POLICE CONFIRMED that a man was cautioned in relation to racial abuse that football pundit Stan Collymore received on social networking website Twitter.

Collymore, a former footballer who played for Nottingham Forest, Liverpool and represented England at international level, reported an abusive tweet that was sent to him on November 27.

Northumbria Police confirmed that a 21-year-old man from Sunderland was arrested as part of the investigation.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "A 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of publishing written material to stir up racial hatred and has received a police caution."

Collymore said on his Twitter account: “Many thanks to Great Manchester & Northumbria Police forces for their prompt response to racism on twitter.”

In March, Newcastle University law student John Cryer, from Jesmond, pleaded guilty to tweeting racial abuse towards Collymore and was given a two-year community order.
