Man throws acid on black woman in suspected racist attack

SUSPECT: Salford male wanted in questioning over the attack

A BLACK woman has been left with permanent scars after a white man threw acid on her in a suspected racist attack.

The 29-year-old victim, from Salford in Manchester, was pushing her baby in a pram when she was attacked on March 22.

The woman, of African heritage, suffered burns to her chest and back but is in a stable condition. Police said the baby narrowly avoided injury.

Police have also issued an e-fit image of the man wanted in questioning over the attack.

The mother was out with her baby at 2pm at the subway on Broad Street in Pendleton, Salford, where she was approached by the man, said to be in his 40s.

It has been reported that the suspect verbally abused the mother with sexual and racial comments before dousing her with liquid that he had stored in a plastic container.

“This was an appalling attack on a lady who was walking with her very young baby,” said detective constable Jim Harris, from Salford CID.

“Thankfully none of the corrosive liquid hit the baby or went on the victim's face as the incident could have been a lot worse than it already is. The offender needs to be caught and held responsible for his actions which have caused a nasty injury to the lady and much distress.”

Harris added: "I would urge anyone who may have seen this man running away from the subway or may have witnessed the attack to contact police as soon as possible."

The attacker was described as white, stocky, 5’ 10” to 6’ 2”, and had very short dark hair with a straight hair line and a bald patch at the back, with blue eyes, a dimple in his chin and a red burn mark on his bottom lip.

His skin was peeling around his cheeks and he had stubble. The offender wore a long-sleeved dark grey jumper with a round neck, black tracksuit bottoms with a grey and white stripe down each leg and black Adidas trainers. He spoke with a 'British' accent.
