Mayor Sadiq Khan Calls for Unity in London

ECONOMIC THREAT: Khan counts the cost of social unrest.

A CLIMATE of fear surrounding potential social upheavals has been spread worldwide after alleged sex pest Donald Trump was announced President-Elect. London Mayor Sadiq Khan has taken the opportunity to remind communities of the virtues of unity and to remember those who 'feel ignored'.

Trump himself today attempted to reassure Americans during a television interview where he directly looked into the camera and told attackers with racist motives to 'stop it' along with a plea of 'don't be afraid' to citizens who were in various states of fear at the prospect of a Trump White House.

Speaking to an audience of fellow UK and European mayors as well as Anthony Shorris, Deputy Mayor for New York City at the first Social Integration Conference at City Hall earlier today, Sadiq Khan said the politics of division must not spread to diverse cities like London.

As well as considering the preservation of peace within the city, Khan highlighted the fact that a lack of social integration costs the economy approximately £6 billion according the mayor's office. Khan also defined social integration as a key factor in maintaining a healthy economy:

"Promoting social integration means ensuring that people of different faiths, ethnicities, social backgrounds and generations don’t just tolerate one another or live side-by-side, but actually meet and mix with one another and forge relationships as friends and neighbours, as well as citizens. We know that when this happens, trust grows, communities flourish and become more productive, healthier and, ultimately, more prosperous for everyone.”

London is officially the most diverse city in the country, where the population is at record levels and where more than 300 languages are spoken.
