Mnangagwa: Robert Mugabe ‘unable to walk'

ILL HEALTH: Former Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe

ROBERT MUGABE is ‘no longer able to walk’ as a result of his failing health, Zimbabwe’s president Emmerson Mnangagwa has revealed.

The former president of Zimbabwe travelled to Singapore, where he has been for the last two months, to receive medical treatment, Mnangagwa said.

The specific cause of Mugabe’s ill health has not been disclosed.
"He is now old. Of course, he now is unable to walk but whatever he asks for we will provide," the AFP news agency reported Mnangagwa said.

It is understood that Mugabe is expected to return to Zimbabwe next week.

It is not the first time that he has visited Singapore to undergo medical treatment.

Earlier this year he was in the country for what was reported to be a medical check-up. Prior to that he went to the country to have cataract removed from his eyes, his officials said, refuting reports from local media organisations that said he had cancer.

In November 2017, the 94-year-old resigned from the presidency after almost 40 years in power.

He was ousted from his leadership following a military coup.

Mnangagwa took over from Mugabe and cemented his position by winning a presidential election in July.

He won 50.8% of the votes, defeating his opponent Nelson Chamisa.

After his election victory, Mnangagwa said he wanted the country to join together to build a new Zimbabwe.

“Though we may have been divided at the polls, we are united in our dreams.

“This is a new beginning. Let us join hands, in peace, unity & love, & together build a new Zimbabwe for all!” he said in a statement.
