Mum of Sarah Reed to talk deaths in custody at London event

SAY HER NAME: Sarah Reed was found unresponsive in her prison cell

THE MOTHER of a woman who died in police custody will speak at an event to end state violence against black women in London’s Hyde Park this evening (may 19).

Marilyn Reed, whose daughter Sarah Reed who was found dead in her cell in her north London police cell in January, will take to the podium at #SayHerName Day of Action to End State Violence Against Black Women, Girls and Femmes from 6pm at the Speakers’ Corner.

“I cannot let Sarah’s death be in vain," Marilyn said. "I want action, I want change.”

Sarah Reed, a mother, daughter, sister and former victim of police brutality and mental health sufferer, was found dead at Holloway Prison on January 11.

A candlelit protest was held outside Holloway on February 8, the evening of Sarah’s burial.

Another protest was held on February 23 in solidarity with prisoners who want to come forward and disclose open letters being sent by the SRJC to the Governor of Holloway prison and to the Prison and Probation Ombudsman.

The Sarah Reed Justice Campaign, set up on behalf of the Reed Family by Blaksox, the social action movement, is supporting the event organised by a coalition of UK Activists as an act of international solidarity with #BlackLivesMatter, BYP 100 and Project South.

It coincides with second national day of action taking place in the US as part of the national #SayHerName campaign, honouring of women, girls and femmes who have died.

“It will be a unique Black women centred space for activists to lift up, unite, connect, heal and build with each other,” organisers said.

Marilyn Reed and Patricia Lamour from the SRJC, Marcia Rigg, sister of Sean Rigg, a musician who died in police custody, and the United Friends and Family Campaign and a range of poets and performers will all speak at tonight’s event.
