National Vegetarian Week: Try something new today

ENTHUSIASTIC: TV chefs The Hairy Bikers

TV CHEFS Si King and Dave Myers – also known as the Hairy Bikers – are on board for National Vegetarian Week (15-21 May) and they think you should be, too!

The Vegetarian Society is a charity that is passionate about veggie food and wants everyone to know how varied and delicious vegetarian dishes are.

Enjoying and maintaining a veggie lifestyle can be easy – and a great way to do it is with tasty meat-free recipes.

Lynne Elliot, chief executive at the Vegetarian Society, said:

“This year we’re delighted to have The Hairy Bikers on board for National Vegetarian Week. We think the endearing duo are the ideal guys to help us encourage more people to give veggie food a go for the week.”

The Hairy Bikers said:

“As cooks, we’ve always appreciated our veg and they are a hugely important part of our cooking. And lately, without really thinking about it, we’ve been eating less meat.

“The more we learn about cooking great food, the more we enjoy making use of all the amazing produce that’s on offer and creating dishes where vegetables, pulses and other plant foods are the stars of the show. That’s why we’re getting stuck into National Vegetarian Week this year – and we think you should, too!”

The Hairy Bikers are excited to be publishing a vegetarian cookbook during National Vegetarian Week this year. The book, entitled The Hairy Dieters Go Veggie, is published by Seven Dials and is the
fifth book in the Hairy Dieters series, which has sold more than 2.5 million copies since their first book in the series was released.

Don't know where to start?

Want to go veggie but not sure how to go about it? Follow these tips and structure your approach to a new culinary existence...

Every meal helps

If you don’t feel you can go veggie all at once, feel good about what you are doing to reduce the amount of meat and fish that you eat.

Stop and think about what you eat

It’s not difficult to be a vegetarian, but if you’ve eaten meat all your life, it is different. You won’t be healthy if you just swap meat or fish with lots of dairy products. Keep an eye on your nutrition.

Ask for help

Going vegetarian is exciting – but it’s also a big step. You can also find help, support and answers to your questions on the Vegetarian Society’s online forums.

Don’t give up

If you find it difficult at first or slip-up, don’t be too hard on yourself, and remember all the great reasons for being vegetarian. Just pick yourself up and give it another go.
