NATURE RULES: Edible treatments for your skin have amazing benefits

GONE ARE the days where you have to spend a fortune on the latest skincare products. With a recent boost in natural skincare in the last few years, it’s easy to see why more and more people are raiding their kitchen cupboards instead of the department stores.

Apple cider vinegar

Apple Cider vinegar is known for providing a number of benefits. It will make your skin smell like salad dressing, but if your skin is acne-prone, it’ll definitely be worth it! Apply with a cotton pad to cleanse skin and let it dry to help tighten pores and kill bacteria.

Coconut oil

Use coconut oil to remove stubborn eye make-up. It will instantly dissolve even the most waterproof mascaras while gently exfoliating and moisturising the delicate eye area. Use fingers to very gently massage eyes before using cotton pads to wipe the excess off. Once you have cleansed your face thoroughly, try leaving some on overnight for even smooth, bright looking skin. Use continuously to even out skin tone.

Tumeric

Prized for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and astringent effects, among many other health benefits, turmeric is great for skin. Turmeric can be used in natural beauty treatments to tighten skin and reduce inflammation. Try turmeric for yourself by mixing this herb with flour and water to make a paste. Rub the paste on your skin while in the shower, then rinse off.

Natural yoghurt

A natural source of lactic acid, yogurt can help minimise pores and exfoliate rough skin while calming and moisturising. Unlike other exfoliants, yogurt is suitable for even sensitive skin. Yogurt also contains protein that makes the skin firmer and more resistant to wrinkles. Try this moisturising yogurt mask.

Calming Mask
1 tablespoon honey
1 teaspoon plain yogurt
2 tablespoons finely ground almonds
½ teaspoon lemon juice

Method:

Mix everything together. Rub gently onto face for 1-2 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.

Carrots

Carrots aren’t just good for your eyes! Thanks to its multiple number of vitamins including, vitamins A, B and C, carrots are also beneficial for your skin. When used topically, carrots can provide tightening, anti-aging effects, helping to restore skin’s elasticity and reduce inflammation. To take advantage of this root vegetable’s beauty benefits, try anti-aging carrot mask.

Anti-aging carrot mask

1 large carrot
1 tablespoon sweet almond oil
5 drops jasmine essential oil (optional)

Method:

1. Peel and purée carrot and strain off juice. (You can drink this!)
2. Blend pulp with sweet almond oil and add jasmine essential oil, if using, drop-by-drop.
3. Apply mixture to your cleansed face, avoiding the eyes and mouth area. Relax and allow the mask to work for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse well with warm water, then pat dry and moisturise as usual.

Caffeinated coffee grounds

If you suffer from hard to shift cellulite, add caffeinated coffee grounds to some olive oil to create a body scrub for a cellulite-fighting exfoliant. Caffeine works by constricting blood vessels when applied to skin, while also increasing circulation to your skin’s surface which is why it works so well in de-puffing eye creams, both of which help to temporarily reduce the appearance of cellulite. Combined with an invigorating scrubbing motion for manual stimulation, this is the perfect way to scrub up before you strip down.
