Nicholson hits sizzler on Belgium top-flight debut

HOT-SHOT: Shamar Nicholson

SHAMAR NICHOLSON, drafted into Jamaica's CONCACAF Nations League squad, scored a stinging debut goal for Royal Charleroi Sporting Club (RCSC) on Saturday (August 31).

The Kingston-born hot-shot received the ball outside the area and, without hesitation, thumped it past the stunned Waasland-Beveren keeper on the hour-mark during their emphatic 4-0 win in the Belgium Pro League.

The 22-year-old has been in prolific form for club and country recently, and started in the Belgian top-flight for the first time since he joined RCSC in mid-August.

He cost the Zebras €1.5 million (£1.29m) to bring him from Slovenian club NK Domžale, where he hit 13 goals in 29 games last season.

The former Boys Town FC star striker left Jamaica's Red Stripe Premier League to sign for NK Domžale in 2017.

That was the same year that Jamaica head coach Theodore Whitmore unearthed the 6'4" dangerman, but it has only been this year that Nicholson has started scoring with aplomb.

Nicholson broke his international duck by bagging the winner in the Reggae Boyz' 1-0 friendly against hosts USA in June.

He followed it up by notching the opener in the 1-1 stalemate against Curaçao in this summer's CONCACAF Gold Cup. He also hit the target in the Boyz' semi-final 3-1 defeat in the prestigious competition to the US.

With the Nations League Group B games coming up against visiting Antigua & Barbuda (Sept 6) and hosts Guyana (Sept 9), it is good timing that Nicholson scored for his new club to add confidence to his swagger on the pitch.
