NICKI MINAJ has announced her retirement from music to have a family.

The pop star declared her intention to quit the music industry in a post on Twitter.

Minaj told fans in a rhyming message that she would be stepping back from the spotlight.

She wrote: "I've decided to retire & have my family. I know you guys are happy now.

"To my fans, keep reppin me, do it til da death of me, in the box- cuz ain't nobody checkin me.

"Love you for LIFE."

The swiftly viral post rapidly earned tens of thousands of retweets and hundreds of thousands of likes.

The 36-year-old rapper is currently dating Kenneth Petty, who according to TMZ is a registered sex offender.

According to reports, the couple have been discussing marriage and children, with rumours swirling that they have already tied the knot.

Speaking on her podcast Queen Radio, Minaj said she and Petty had to refile for a marriage license after their first one expired, convincing fans they had got married.

The rapper first made waves in the music scene after the release of her third mixtape Beam Me Up Scotty. She signed to Young Money, alongside rapper Drake, where she appeared on many compilation albums and features throughout her career.

Minaj released her debut album Pink Friday in 2010, to worldwide success with tracks including Starships, Super Bass.

The star released two follow-up albums, The Pinkprint and Queen and she has starred in films including The Other Woman alongside Cameron Diaz.
