Nigeria's 'Lady of Songs' dies, aged 51

POPULAR Nigerian singer Christy Essien-Igbokwe has died aged 51, according to family sources.

It has been reported that Essien-Igbokwe, known as the 'Lady of Songs', passed away yesterday [June 30] at a private hospital in Lagos after falling ill three days earlier.

Essien-Igbokwe, whose career spanned over 35 years, was most acclaimed for becoming the first female president of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN).

Some of her best loved songs include Mo mi Seun Rere‚ Ife‚ and Moloro.

Paying tribute to the icon, Dele Abiodun, PMAN president, said: "We lost a legend."

The singer is survived by her husband, Edwin, and four children.
