NIPSEY HUSSLE’s parents have broken their silence after the rapper was killed in Los Angeles last month (Mar 19).

Nipsey’s mother Angelique Smith and father Dawit Asghedom spoke to the Los Angeles Times about their son, with Dawit saying how proud he is of the late hip-hop star’s powerful messages in his songs.

"It was like he was sent by God to give some love to bring us together because that's what his lyrics were saying, always," he explained. "He's not shy to tell the truth even though it might not look good. He wasn't scared of anything. (God) sent him to send a message."

In the wake of Nipsey’s murder, Dawit says he is seeking comfort in the fact that his music sparked change. "We all have a plan, but God has his own plan. So he had completed what he needed to be doing and he did it early so (God) probably wanted to take him early too."

In the chat, Angelique recalled her son’s early years at school and what he was like as a child. "He recognised at an early age his own capability. His own potential. He has always known."

Angelique said she’ll always remember her son as a “humble, spirited, respectful man who had, since his childhood, had an extraordinary and unlimited intellectual capacity".

Also featured in the interview was Nipsey’s girlfriend actress Lauren London, who started dating the rapper in 2013 and shares two-year-old son Kross with him. She said: "I'm going to keep my head high and always represent for my king to the fullest. He loved his kids. He was a family man. His family came first."

A memorial event to honour Nipsey will take place in Los Angeles at the Staple Center on Thursday (Apr 11). In addition, the intersection of Slauson Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard will be renamed as “Ermaias ‘Nipsey Hussle’ Asghedom Square” in his honour.
