AS A mark of respect and remembrance for Grenfell, a 72-second silence will once again be held at 3pm on the Sunday and Monday of this year’s Notting Hill Carnival.
Notting Hill Carnival Executive Director, Matthew Phillip explains: “Following on from the respects paid last year to those lost in Grenfell, we have once again been speaking with representatives from Grenfell United, and we ask that all participants and spectators of this year’s Notting Hill Carnival respect the 72 seconds at 3pm on both Sunday and Monday to honour the 72 people who died.
“We are working with our partners to ensure the message of the silence is clear throughout Carnival, but we ask the community and beyond to please spread the message of the silence through their own social media channels using #GrenfellSilence3pm or simply reposting Notting Hill Carnival’s official channels Twitter: @NHCarnivalLDN Instagram: @nhcarnivalldn FB: @NHCarnivalLDN.
“We ask that everyone who is attending this year's Carnival comes in solidarity and to come in a spirit of peace, love and unity and respect the silence and take time to remember.”
The 72-Second silence will involve all of the Sound Systems, parade floats and live stages who will simultaneously tune into radio station The Beat London 103.6FM who will play a prerecorded message from actor and NHC Ambassador Colin Salmon to coordinate the announcement and silence.
The official Notting Hill Carnival app will send a push notification to its users as a reminder of each day's silence and will also alert any within the quiet zones around the Grenfell site to respect it as a peaceful and quiet area.
